My own method is to select a pedestrian crossing, then, lifting an arm in an abrupt Roman salute rather like an angry actor in the part of Cassius, to step straight off the kerb and start walking. The arm must be uplifted with resolution and maintained in that position until the other side of the road is achieved. There must be no weakening like that of poor Mr Mathias. At the slightest hint of irresolution the four lines of racing motorists, less humane than the coachmen of 1820, would gladly encircle one. The act is really a battle of wills between oneself and the drivers; though I am glad to say that it is not as dangerous as it looks since all the Italians drive on their brakes and are able to pull up within a foot if obliged to do so. I have convoyed numerous people across the Via Partenope and have never lost anyone, though I admit that I have had crossings during the rush hours which have justified the anguished expressions of those unwilling to make the adventure, who have remained on the other side watching their loved ones advancing apparently into the jaws of death.
